University College, Oxford

Project:Fourth Floor Extension

Project Outline:
Works have recently completed on a 4th floor extension as part of the modernisation of the student accommodation at Oxford University. Acting as a design consultant we assisted SIPs Eco panels with the design (and build) of the new forth floor structure constructed from SIPs panels. The design included an intricate 'saw tooth' roof shape with tapering cantilevering canopy's. Careful design consideration was required to ensure the fascia edge remained as slim as possible along with stringent insulation requirements to avoid cold bridging.

Due to the age of the college and its location in the centre of Oxford, access to site was tight, with each of the components having to be carried through narrow alleyways and underneath the low arches to the build location ready for installation, then lifted to the 4th floor. The project was a fascinating and challenging one to work on and work on site was successfully completed ahead of schedule in March 2015.

St. Albans Sixth Form, Ipswich

Project: New Sixth Form Building

Client: Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia

Contractor: Brooks and Wood

Architect: Hoopers Architects

 

Project Outline:

This project involved the construction of a new standalone sixth form block for St. Albans Catholic School. Detailed ground investigations proved that a traditional spread foundation solution and ground bearing slabs could be utilised. The principal structure consists of a steel frame, which cantilevers asymmetrically to the sides of the building. The internal finishes scheme is a modern, stripped out concept which means the principal structure of the building is exposed. Careful detailing was required to ensure the appearance of the structural elements worked with the Architect's vision for the interior.

 

The building is complete and is a great example of what can be achieved in educational buildings with tight budgets and a little lateral thinking.

Cliff Road, Felixstowe

Project: New Dwelling - Cliff Road, Felixstowe

Contractor: SEH French 

Architect: Robert Allerton

 

Project Outline:

The previous dwelling on this site has been demolished to make way for a new modern 2/ 3 storey home. Traditional trench fill concrete foundations were only just viable given the site geology. The superstructure consists of a combination of load bearing masonry, precast concrete floors and isolated steel frames. A complete steel frame with curved rafters has been used to create the barrel vaulted, open plan third floor, which will provide fantastic sea front views.

 

This project is curently under construction and we eagerly await the finished article.

Bucklesham Road, Ipswich

Project: Bucklesham Road, Ipswich

Contractor: Steve Clarke Projects

Architect: Paul Boswell - Patrick Allen Ltd

 

Project Outline:

The construction of this new high specification, detached house has just been completed. Superstructures undertook complete structural engineering services on the project which included the design of vaulted roofs throughout the building, steel framing around large glazed openings and folding doors, and steelwork to create large open plan areas with an internal courtyard. The contractors' high level of finish sets off this wonderful property.

Visitors Centre, West Street Vineyard

Project: West Street Vineyard

Construction Consultant: Dayle Bayliss

Contractor: Seamans Building

 

Project Outline:

This project involved the construction of a new visitors centre building at West Street Vineyard in Coggeshall. Superstructures designed and detailed a reinforced concrete basement which runs beneath the entire footprint of the building, along with external balconies and ramps. The basement structure supports a pre-fabricated specialist timber structure designed by the German manufacturer Hanse Haus. Facilities include a shop, restaurant, tasting room, wine store and function room.

 

Due to the prevailing ground conditions and site proximity to a river flood plain Superstructures designed a de-watering system to allow excavations for the basement to proceed without the need for sheet piling providing significant savings to the client.
